Candidate shoots TV ad underwater

In a 15-candidate Democratic primary field for Rahm Emanuel’s Congressional seat, it can be tough to get noticed.

So economics professor Charlie Wheelan took the unconventional step of recording his first campaign ad  submerged in water while discussing the country’s economic woes.

"Underwater. That's where a lot of us are financially thanks to the Bush administration and greed on Wall Street," a fully clothed Wheelan says in the ad as bubbles come out of his mouth.

The ad was produced by famed political adman Bill Hillsman, who is responsible for the late Sen. Paul Wellstone’s memorable ads that propelled him to an upset Senate victory in Minnesota.

It will be airing air on cable television during Super Bowl programming this Sunday.

Wheelan’s main competitors in the Democratic primary are state Rep. Sara Feigenholtz, state Rep. John Fritchey, Chicago City Council Alderman Patrick O’Connor and fellow academic Tom Geoghegan. The special election primary will be held on March 3.
