Patrick Murphy mulls Senate campaign

As MSNBC's Chris Matthews decides whether to run for the Senate, a new potential challenger has emerged.

Roll Call's Shira Toeplitz reports that Rep. Patrick Murphy (D-Pa.), one of the few Iraq war veterans in Congress, is "very strongly" considering running against Sen. Arlen Specter (R-Pa.) in 2010, according to one of his advisers.

Murphy, in his first term in the House, was a prominent surrogate for Obama's presidential campaign in the run-up to the Pennsylvania primary.

Murphy reported over $1.5 million in his campaign account in mid-October, giving him ample money for a statewide bid. Rep. Allyson Schwartz (D-Pa.) and state Rep. Josh Shapiro are also mulling Senate campaigns.
