Grassley looks in good shape for re-election

Sen. Charles Grassley (R-Iowa) continues to hold strong approval ratings, and appears in good position for re-election unless former Iowa governor Tom Vilsack decides to run against him.

Those are the findings of a new poll commissioned by the liberal website Daily Kos. The poll shows Grassley with a strong 57 percent approval rating, with only 36 percent of voters disapproving of his performance.

But in a hypothetical head-to-head matchup against Vilsack, the state’s popular former governor, Grassley only leads by four points, 48 to 44 percent.   Vilsack has given no indication that he's interested in running for the Senate.

There has been speculation that Grassley would retire after serving five terms in the Senate. But if he doesn’t face any top-tier challengers, he might figure it’s worthwhile to stick around for another term.

The poll, conducted by Research 2000, surveyed 600 likely Iowa voters between December 8-10.
