Gordon Smith concedes...

... in an e-mail sent to his supporters, where he calls the national Democratic tide "too high to overcome":

From the bottom of my heart I want to say thank you. Elections come and go but friendships endure. And no one is more grateful today than I am for the friendship and support you have shown me, Sharon and our family over the past 16 years - from the State Senate to the U.S. Senate.

Earlier today I phoned Jeff Merkley and congratulated him and his supporters on their victory and wished him well as he assumes the trust Oregonians have placed in him as their U.S. Senator. Please join me in wishing him well. While defeat is disappointing, I have no regrets about the campaign we waged. Simply, the national political tide was too high to overcome.
