Financial Crisis Kills Debate Plans

How bad is the financial crisis? It's bad enough that NBC's Meet the Press has canceled a planned Senate debate in order to cover the up and down stock market.

Reps. Steve Pearce and Tom Udall, battling for retiring Senator Pete Domenici's seat, were slated to debate this Sunday before getting the boot.

"Due to our need to focus the program on the escalating financial crisis, we are going to be unable to host this Sunday's New Mexico Senate Debate. We hope you understand that as a news program we sometimes have to change our programming plans as major news dictates," MTP executive producer Betsy Fischer wrote in an email to the two campaigns.

Udall's financial advantage and the beneficial climate have combined to give him an 18-point lead in the latest RCP New Mexico Average. Pearce and Udall will meet three more times around the state, with debaes planned for KOB-TV, KRQE-TV and KOAT-TV over the next two weeks.
