Schaffer's oil ties

There's nothing like using a politician's words against them.

That's what the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee is doing in its new ad against Colorado Senate candidate Bob Schaffer (R), using a clip from an interview he conducted last year with Denver's PBS affiliate.  The ad takes a small snippet of Schaffer's interview with PBS interviewer Aaron Harber and plays it over and over again.

"I'm in the oil and gas business -- that's the fun part," Schaffer says in the interview, as the advertisement scrolls across the screen that he received $171,000 in donations from oil company employees in his Senate bid.

Before running for the Senate, Schaffer served as vice president for business development activities for Aspect Energy.

Energy has been the top issue in the Colorado Senate race between Schaffer and Rep. Mark Udall (D-Colo.).  Schaffer has attacked Udall for switching his longtime opposition to offshore drilling, while Udall has portrayed Schaffer as a pawn of big oil interests.
