Rooney fundraiser draws scrutiny

Tom Rooney, the Republican challenger to Rep. Tim Mahoney (D-Fla.), has been drawing fire from Florida Democrats for holding a fundraiser with President Bush next week.

Now Democrats are scrutinizing the fundraiser’s host, who is currently under federal investigation over his financial dealings.

From the Palm Beach Post:

He’s accused in court documents of raiding the coffers of his whiskey barrel-making business to fund his champagne-and-caviar lifestyle.

And now, a criminal investigations unit of the IRS has him in its sights as a federal grand jury is probing his financial practices, according to a subpoena obtained by Page Two LIVE.

Yet next week, Palm Beach Gardens moneybags John Boswell, 61, is hosting President George W. Bush a his $10 million Frenchmen’s Creek mansion for an afternoon cocktail party.

The Sept. 18 shindig is primarily a fund-raiser for U.S. congressional candidate Tom Rooney - a West Palm constitutional lawyer who’s out to beat Democratic incumbent Tim Mahoney in a District 16. The district, once represented by for golden boy Mark Foley, stretches through the Treasure Coast and across the state.
