New Mexico GOP recruit up with first ad

Fresh off attending a rally for the McCain-Palin ticket earlier this week in Albuquerque, Bernalillo County Sheriff Darren White is up with his first campaign ad, as he vies to succeed Rep. Heather Wilson (R-N.M.)

The ad, titled “Ready to Lead,” highlights his military service and record as sheriff of the most populous county in the state.

White, one of the leading Republican recruits, is running against Democrat Martin Heinrich in one of the most competitive battleground districts in the country.

His success may well depend on how well McCain does in New Mexico's First District.  If Obama outperforms President Bush, who narrowly lost the district in 2004, White will have to depend on more ticket-splitters to win the seat.

The DCCC, meanwhile, has been trying to connect White with the unpopular president, and has been up on air attacking White for holding a fundraiser with President Bush.
