Udall, Pearce To Debate

Reps. Tom Udall and Steve Pearce will meet four times to debate issues in their race for an open Senate seat, the Associated Press reported late yesterday. The two candidates will face off three times during the final two weeks of the campaign in debates broadcast on television stations around the state, with an additional appearance slated for "Meet the Press" in Washington.

Pearce, the Republican running to replace retiring Senator Pete Domenici, had been hammering Udall for months on a proposal to hold a series of debates around New Mexico. Two weeks ago, Pearce sent a letter to Udall urging him to come to an agreement over debates, the last in a series of back-and-forth volleys each candidate has fired.

Udall, the Democratic nominee, is well ahead in every public poll. The candidates will meet October 15, October 18 and October 26, as well as at NBC studios in Washington at a date that has yet to be decided.
