Kennedy hits Landrieu on immigration

One day after a leading Republican Congressional nominee in Louisiana said that immigration is not the top issue on Louisiana voters’ minds, his party’s Senate nominee is highlighting the issue in a new ad.

State Treasurer John Kennedy is attacking Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) over illegal immigration in his latest ad, accusing the senator of opposing legislation that would crack down on illegal immigrants receiving Social Security benefits.

The ad features screaming voices in the background as a narrator accuses Landrieu of “using Social Security to scare seniors.”

His ad is in response to a Landrieu spot that attacks Kennedy for supporting Social Security privatization.

“Mary Landrieu voted to allow illegal immigrants into the Social Security system,” a narrator in the ad says. “A raid on Social Security for illegal immigrants. Illegal immigrants -- now that’s really scary, Mary.”

Immigration hasn’t been as contentious of an issue in Louisiana as in other states. To wit: One of the state’s leading House recruits, state senator Bill Cassidy, has said he supports expanding guest worker programs, a proposition usually not embraced by border security hawks.

In fact, Cassidy criticized his Democratic opponent, Rep. Don Cazayoux (D-La.), for recently touring the U.S.-Mexico border to inspect border patrol facilities instead of focusing on energy policy.

“Sure immigration is an important issue, but right now Republicans in Congress are fighting to expand production of our own resources,” Cassidy told the Baton Rouge Advocate.
