English hits opponent on tax returns

After airing four positive ads for the last two months, Rep. Phil English (R-Pa.) is up with his first attack against his Democratic opponent, Kathy Dahlkemper.

The ad attacks Dahlkemper, the director of an arboretum, for not releasing her tax returns — a notably non-ideological issue that has become a major cause for English. In April, English released his tax returns and in an advertisement called on all candidates to do the same.

His new ad blames Dahlkemper for not living up to that standard.

“Voters should expect full financial disclosure from their candidates. That’s why Phil English released his tax returns to the public. And why Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton and John McCain all released their tax returns,” a narrator says in the ad.

“But Kathy Dahlkemper refused to release her tax return to the public. If full financial disclosure from our candidates is important, then why was Kathy Dahlkemper the only one of the five candidates who refused to release her tax returns?”

English is facing his toughest reelection bid since 1996. Dahlkemper’s campaign released an internal poll last month showing her with a one-point lead over English in the Erie-based district.
