Top 10 State of the Union Addresses

1 / 11

On Tuesday, President Obama will deliver his fourth State of the Union address before a joint session of the 113th Congress (his February 2009 speech was not technically a State of the Union address). Following his re-election victory, the president has a unique opportunity to lay out a set of goals for the next four years. Obama is expected to outline a broad agenda addressing issues such as immigration reform, gun control, education, clean energy, climate change and, most importantly, how to grow the economy and create jobs.

In advance of the speech, we take a look back at 10 of the most notable addresses in U.S. history. Some on this list merit inclusion because of a particular policy proposal or memorable statement. Others are included simply for their proximity to historical events or the unique logistical circumstances surrounding them. All, however, are key political touchstones in American history.
