Roger Taney

Nominated by: Andrew Jackson

Roger Taney was the first Catholic to serve on the Court and the fifth Chief Justice. He was nominated by Andrew Jackson in 1836 and held the seat until 1864. Taney is perhaps best remembered for his majority opinion in Dred Scott v. Sanford.
