Kentucky, ranking eighth with 495, is also fighting meth use by restricting the availability of its ingredients. According to a 2012 law, Kentuckians are allowed no more than 24 grams of allergy or cold medicine containing pseudoephedrine per year without a prescription. Since 2012, the state has seen a 40 percent reduction in meth labs detected, according to the director of neighboring Tennessee’s Bureau of Investigation, who is pushing for a similar law in his state.
