Michelle Obama Stumps for Braley -- Not "Bailey"

Michelle Obama returned to Iowa on Tuesday to campaign for Democratic Senate candidate Bruce Braley -- and this time she remembered his name.

After Braley was introduced, the first lady said, “Bruce Braley. Now, some of you may remember the last time I was here, I got it wrong ... a couple of times.”

During a visit earlier this month, she repeatedly referred to Braley as “Bruce Bailey” (and also incorrectly identified him as a Marine Corps veteran). It wasn’t the first time someone made the same mistake -- Bill Clinton also referred to Braley as “Bailey” in September.

Mrs. Obama explained that “I never call them the right names,” referring to her own family memberrs. “I call Barack Bo. … It never works out really well.”

Braley is locked in a tight race with Republican state Sen. Joni Ernst. RCP rates the race a “tossup,” with Ernst leading by an average of 2.5 percentage points in the polls.

While the first lady made a humorous recovery from the previous mishap, the visit didn’t go off entirely without a hitch. The White House released a transcript of the event with the subject line: “Remarks by the First Lady at a Grassroots Campaign Event with Democratic Candidate for Governor Bruce Braley.”
