Deval Patrick Says He Won't Run for President

By Scott Conroy - July 17, 2013

Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick has ruled out mounting a 2016 presidential campaign, The Boston Globe reports.

"I am not running for president in 2016," Patrick said at a UMass-Boston press availability on Tuesday.

The Massachusetts Democrat’s second term ends in January 2015, and he has previously ruled out running for a third.

Patrick had long been the subject of a faint 2016 buzz, and a recent decision by Massachusetts Democratic Party Chairman John Walsh to resign from his post in order to helm the governor’s political action committee reignited speculation that Patrick intended to explore a presidential bid.

But Patrick on Tuesday made clear that he planned to return to the private sector in 2015, while working through his PAC to recruit candidates for public office.

“I am interested in people who are willing to run, willing to lose -- meaning they actually believe in something and are willing to put it on the line,” he said.
