Newt Gingrich to Suspend Campaign

By Erin McPike - April 25, 2012

Newt Gingrich spokesman R.C. Hammond confirmed to RealClearPolitics that the former House speaker will suspend his campaign for president sometime next week.

According to Hammond, Mitt Romney spoke on the phone to his one-time top rival this morning.

"The two are hatching plans about how Newt can best help stop President Obama from achieving a second term," Hammond said. He added that Gingrich also wants to assist GOP efforts to keep the House under party control and flip the Senate away from Democratic control.

Although Rick Santorum has not yet endorsed Romney, Hammond said that an endorsement is already in the works from Gingrich and likely will be made next week.
