Ron Paul Goes After Gingrich With Iowa TV Ad

The Ron Paul campaign will soon take to the airwaves in Iowa with a shorter version of a scathing Web video released last week that attacks Newt Gingrich as a "serial" hypocrite.

The spot will begin running on Wednesday in Iowa, where in less than a month voters will begin to narrow down the Republican presidential field. The longtime Texas congressman is also running another ad -- titled "Big Dog" -- in the state, touting his plan to cut government agencies; it depicts Paul's Republican rivals as dogs with "lots of bark" that whimper "like little Shih Tzus" when it's "showtime."

Narration for the minute-long anti-Gingrich ad consists mostly of news sound bites describing the former House speaker's ties to the troubled mortgage company Freddie Mac, which reportedly paid him $1.6 million as a consultant. There are also references to a similar relationship Gingrich had with health care companies that supported the individual mandate that is a part of President Obama's health care law. "He's demonstrating himself to be the very essence of the Washington insiders," says a pundit featured in the spot.

"We wanted to ensure this ad reached as many voters as possible, to debunk the myth that the Newt we are seeing on the 2012 campaign trail is the conservative he has been touted to be all along,” said Paul Campaign Chairman Jesse Benton in a statement released with the ad. “The voters are looking for authentic conservatives who are able to show a decades-long career of consistently walking the walk of Constitutional principles, limited government, and promoting sound economic policies. Ron Paul is the only Republican presidential candidate with that record.”

Meanwhile, a pair of polls released this week show Gingrich leading the GOP field in Iowa. The former House speaker launched his own television commercial in Iowa on Monday as part of a $250,000 ad buy.
