Obama Releases List of Campaign Fundraising "Bundlers"

By Caitlin Huey-Burns - July 15, 2011

The Obama campaign on Friday released a list of over 240 people who have each raised at least $50,000 for his re-election campaign. The list of top fundraisers includes Vogue editor Anna Wintour, former Goldman Sachs CEO and New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine, DreamWorks CEO Jeffery Katzenberg and other notable members of the Hollywood and financial communities.

These volunteer fundraisers are often referred to in campaign terms as "bundlers" and use their substantial personal connections to haul in money on a candidate's behalf. Wintour, Corzine and Katzenberg, for example, each raised upwards of $500,000 for Obama for America. Ari Emanuel, a Hollywood agent and brother of the president's former chief of staff (and current Chicago mayor) Rahm Emanuel, raised between $50,000 and $100,000. Obama's 2008 fundraising chair, Penny Pritzker, raised between $100,000 and $200,000. Mellody Hobson and John Rogers, president and chairman, respectively, of Chicago-based Ariel Investment, helped raise $200,000 to $500,000. The Obama campaign is running its main operations out of Chicago, as was the case in the 2008 election.

The president received at least $76.5 million from 560 bundlers during his '08 campaign, according to data from the Center for Responsive Politics. Obama's re-election team earlier this week reported raising $47 million in the second quarter this year.

Campaign manager Jim Messina said Wednesday that the Obama operation is filing a 15,000-page finance report, which includes a list of campaign donors, with the Federal Election Commission.
