Demanding Congress Do Its Job Apparrently Too Much to Ask

NOV 20, 2019 - Members of Congress scurried this week to beat Thursday's deadline to approve a spending bill funding the federal government through Dec. 20. Next month they're likely to repeat the exercise — and that time, with negotiations on another stopgap measure perhaps occurring amid House votes on impeachment. Lovely.The goal is to avert a partial government shutdown, events that usually leave both major political parties looking bad and which are costly to taxpayers. The last three shutdowns cost taxpayers $3.7 billion in back pay to furloughed federal workers, according to a report in September by a subcommittee of the Senate Homeland Security and Government Affairs Committee.Shutdowns also slow economic growth.
