Gammy Deserves a Happy Ending Too

It’s as if the Brothers Grimm had risen from the grave to write a dark fairy tale for the 21st century. An Australian couple employs a poor Thai street-food seller as a surrogate mother for their biological baby. Pattaramon Chanbua becomes pregnant with twins, one of whom has Down’s syndrome. The Australian parents appear to decide they don’t want the faulty product of the transaction (cost: A$16,000, or £9,000) and they ask – or tell – 21‑year-old Ms Chanbua to have an abortion. She refuses.
