The Great Invasion, 70 Years Later

Seventy years ago today, 22-year-old Cpl. Dan Ursitti was waiting in southern England to board a boat to France. He landed on Omaha Beach shortly after June 6, 1944 — D-Day — and almost died on the spot. The beaches had been cleared of the enemy by the first waves of Allied troops, but the coxswain of Ursitti's landing craft dropped the door a little too soon. The 5-foot-2-inch Ursitti plunged into water over his head. The guys behind pushed him to shore.
