Chris Murphy, a freshman senator from Connecticut, made his maiden speech on the Senate floor on April 10. It was the day the Senate was set to vote on a bill that would make background checks mandatory for anyone who wanted to purchase a gun.

“I didn’t expect this,” he told his colleagues, meaning that when he was running for office he never expected that his first Senate speech would be about gun violence.
