May We Cherish This Framework of Freedom

Today marks the 234th year of American independence, a quality that is as enduring as it is taken for granted. What binds the United States together through wars, political divisions and other conflicts are the ideals found in the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Bill of Rights.

Harry S. Truman, the nation's 33rd president, dedicated the new shrine at the National Archives for these sacred documents on Dec. 15, 1952. This excerpt of Truman's plain-spoken address is worth considering this Fourth of July.
