Melissa Harris-Perry: GOP Likes Racial Discourse Associated With 1860s
Melissa Harris-Perry, MSNBC: "Well, I think there is a lot of things that they (Republicans) like about 1860. Obviously, part of it is a clear kind of racial discourse. This is about states' rights and states' rights are all kinds of discriminatory possibilities. One is certainly about African-Americans, about voting rights, but the other piece of it has been this profound anti-immigration legislation that states have passed, these marriage equality -- states rights becomes a cover for talking about the ability to remove the rights of some American citizens because those citizens' rights exist in the states rather than as national rights."
