Krauthammer: Romney Has Gone "Unscathed" And "Gets A Free Ride"
Charles Krauthammer says Mitt Romney has gone through 11 debates unscathed by not only the media, but his opponents too. Krauthammer was disappointed by Romney's performance in his interview with FOX News' Bret Baier, which aired last night.
"I think as Newt is rising we're now going to see Romney's biggest challenge. The others who had risen up against him were either rookies or people who are not substantial like Cain. But now he's up against Gingrich, who knows how to argue, knows how to debate. He's been on all of the issues for decades. So, he's a substantial counterweight and Romney's going to have to answer questions. Up until now he went through 11 debates unscathed. In part, because when you have 11 folks up on stage you don't get any followups.
"What happened in your questioning of him yesterday was that you were able to follow up and present him with evidence of stuff that he had said in the past. And that's where he stumbled. He stumbled on immigration where you showed a clip from 2007. A quote. Essentially he has said here he said something -- almost hard to distinguish about what Newt has been saying people are here for a long time, illegally.
"And then also on the issue of RomneyCare he's had a standard answer but you asked him about -- it was a quote in the past in which he seemed to be implying that the Massachusetts experiment was an example to the whole nation. So he ended up with fine distinction between the example to other states. Versus, for example, to the federal government. Nonetheless, it shows that now as the race is narrowing, and as these other pretenders fall away, if he's in a one-on-one or one-on-two where there are going to be close questioning followups as you offered yesterday. He's going to be tested and we'll whether he gets a free ride as he has until now in the large debates, or not."
