White House's Valerie Jarrett Drops "Foreign Money" Accusation
Over the past several works numerous members of the Obama administration and various Democrats have claimed groups such as the Chamber of Commerce and GOP advocacy campaigns, such as Karl Rove's Crossroads GPS have taken "foreign money."
However, on MSNBC's "Morning Joe," White House senior adviser Valerie Jarrett did not accuse these groups of taking foreign money. Instead, she claimed President Obama has been an "advocate for disclosure and transparency in campaign finance." Jarrett has previously made the implication. "He believes it's important that people understand where the money is coming from. As you have noted in this campaign season, millions and millions of dollars from special interests have been flooding into the campaign. That's the public right to do, but, however, what we think is important is just show where the money is coming from," she added.
"Transparency and disclosure is our primary point that we've been trying to make. I think that's a valid point," Jarrett concluded. Jarrett even goes as far to say this disclosure is especially "important" to Americans who are out of work.
Yet, the President, his chief adviser David Axelrod and press secretary have fervently claimed foreign entities are giving money to GOP groups and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. Democrats such as Tim Kaine and Jim Clyburn have also repeated this claim. Clyburn went as far to say the House would investigate the Chamber and Rep. Joe Sestak (D-PA), candidate for US Senate, called the Chamber's activities "un-American."
Even liberal MSNBC hosts such as Keith Olbermann, Ed Schultz and Chris Matthews have made this argument, without any clear proof. However, a fact check done by ABC News shows there is no proof behind this allegation.
Karl Rove has responded and claimed the White House has an enemies list. Mark Levin has also blasted the Obama administration for making such claims.
After this story became the focus of media attention, the Chamber felt compelled to respond. "I have never seen anything that rises to the level of this with any administration and I think it speaks of really grasping of straws," Bruce Josten, the Executive VP of Government Affairs at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce told FOX News last week.
It seems the White House is backing off their "foreign money" claim.
