Rep. Rangel To Obama: Stay Out Of NY Primaries
NY1: Rep. Charles Rangel (D-NY) said he was "surprised" President Obama called Long Island Rep. Steve Israel to urge him not to challenge Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand in a primary next year. Rangel said Obama shouldn't get involved in primaries. Partial transcript below.
RANGEL: "You know I was really surprised that the [president] got involved in the state race, once you open the door to start making these decisions within the party, I could give him a list of states that I have preferences on and ask him to get involved in. I think it's bad public policy for a president to do that. In a general election, of course, it's bad public policy if he doesn't do it."
