McCain and Crist
From the Ft. Myers News-Press:
Republican presidential candidate John McCain walked with Gov. Charlie Crist into a news conference here, describing the Florida governor as worthy of the national role in the Republican Party, but would not say he would be his vice presidential candidate."This will be a battleground state," said McCain, with his wife standing next to him. "I believe I can win it but I have a lot of work to do."
McCain spoke about offshore drilling, the success of the surge in Iraq and Senator Barack Obama playing the race card.
This brings to mind just how much Crist helped McCain in Florida during the primaries -- which still stands as one of Crist's claims to the spot. It was a last-minute endorsement, but it nevertheless helped McCain win Florida and the nomination.
Why it matters is that McCain is known for giving personal friendships a large role in his political life. It's those sorts of particularities that make the veepstakes such a hard game to predict.
