When U.S. Sen. John McCain arrives in Portsmouth Wednesday, as part of his campaign to become the next president of the United States, he will be welcomed by Rob Portman.

"I've delivered about three dozen speeches around the state this year on behalf of Republicans and John McCain," said Portman, a former White House budget director, U.S. trade representative and U.S. representative from Ohio's 2nd District. "In all of those speeches, I talk about Sen. McCain and why I'm supporting him."

A grassroots group determined to promote Secretary of State Rice as Republican John McCain's potential vice presidential nominee plans to survey NAACP members this weekend to gauge the viability of her candidacy.

Richard Holt, national director for the group, Think Condi, will query NAACP members Saturday at the opening of the organization's annual convention in Cincinnati.

"Our efforts will help keep the voters aware that Condi Rice is the best vice-presidential choice for John McCain," Holt told The Mouth. "We are encouraging him to pick her."

Barack Obama's vice presidential selection team has begun to ask potential candidates for information and documents, a signal that the formal vetting phase of the search process has begun.
