Davis: Who's In, Who's Out

Over at the Dallas Morning News, columnist Mark Davis takes a look at where Obama's short list stands today. While noting that Clinton, Wes Clark and Chuck Hagel are out, Davis thinks Biden, Richardson, Evan Bayh and Ed Rendell are in.

I'm certainly with Davis on Clark and Hagel. The former is simply a poor politician, while the latter would be a bridge too far for Obama's base. But, as I wrote yesterday, I think Clinton is still in contention and certainly has as good a shot at it as Davis' other contenders. Biden and Bayh should be considered top-tier right now, but I think the edge goes to Bayh given his youth, executive experience (two-term governor), and pull in a battleground state.

Richardson and Rendell are different. Davis notes that Richardson's resume includes "governor, congressman, U.N. ambassador and energy secretary." Exactly, and that counted for how much in the primaries? Point is, Richardson has never been able to excite voters, and it looks like Obama will get the Hispanic vote without him. Rendell is a solid politician with a good record, but it's hard to see Obama choosing him over a flashier candidate like Clinton.
