The Next Ronald Reagan?
As noted in today's Daily Buzz, Rush Limbaugh heralded La. Gov. Bobby Jindal as "the next Ronald Reagan if he does not change."
As the youngest governor in the nation, Jindal is obviously very talented. Conservatives especially see in him the future of the GOP. But despite his accomplishments, he's still seen as a mostly inexperienced politician. Obama has managed to overcome his own deficit with his magnificent rhetorical skills. Jindal is seen as a talented speaker, but he doesn't (yet) have the charismatic presence of an Obama.
Which is another way of saying that it might not be Jindal's moment yet. He's accomplishing great things for Louisiana right now, and perhaps Republicans should let him continue that. I've mentioned before that Jindal needs his "Obama Moment," when the Illinois state senator erupted onto the national scene with his speech at the 2004 convention. Or, if you prefer, a "Reagan Moment," as when Reagan erupted on the national scene in a televised speech on behalf of Barry Goldwater in 1964.
Putting Jindal on the ticket now could severely damage his future prospects should they lose big. Or maybe not. Maybe it's just what Jindal needs to catapult himself to the forefront. Of course if a McCain/Jindal ticket should win, it's another story!
But it seems that Republicans might be better served letting Jindal mature a bit before putting all their hopes in him.
