Pawlenty Talks to Brody File

David Brody of the Brody File spoke to Tim Pawlenty this morning and has video of the interview. Here's a transcript of their exchange on evangelical voters:

Governor Tim Pawlenty : "John McCain is a person of faith and he is a committed Christian and he is somebody that I think is probably less comfortable being overt about that than perhaps some others might be but his value system and his belief in Christ I think is something that is part of who he is as a person and I think he is somebody who would be well received by Christian leaders and Evangelical leaders and I just want to encourage the McCain campaign to make that effort and to reach out and they are but I think there are a lot of Christian leaders, evangelical leaders who haven't yet been contacted or who haven't been part of meetings who are feeling perhaps, are they going to reach out to me and at a minimum we want to make sure that he is speaking on issues of concern to them and I think you'll see perhaps more of that in the summer and fall."

Brody: "So there is somewhat of an acknowledgment that he does need to do some more outreach in this area especially because Obama is going after that Evangelical vote?"

Governor Tim Pawlenty: "Yes, well that has been of course a big part of the Republican coalition, the conservative coalition for years and I think that's an important stakeholder group and it's also one that lines up with Senator McCain's beliefs sand so it is not an unnatural fit or an inauthentic or disingenuous fit. There's a natural connection point there and hopefully that will be able to be made."

Obama might be making a run at Evangelicals, but he's about as sure of getting them as McCain is the anti-war vote. Evangelicals will either vote McCain or they won't vote. Of course the surest way to keep Evangelical voters from going astray is to remind them that there are two possible Supreme Court vacancies coming up and a President Obama and a Democratic Senate (with a possible veto-proof majority) won't be picking pro-life-friendly judges.

Another way would be to choose an avid pro-lifer to be his running mate, something McCain has said he is considering.
