WALLACE: But -- oh, come on.
(LAUGHTER)
BAYH: Well, I'm trying my best not to make news on that this morning, so I hope you'll forgive me. But truly, they've established a process. It's their process. And I think it's up to them to respond to that.
WALLACE: Are you in the process?
BAYH: You know, I'd love to answer your question, but I think I really can't.
Biden reportedly spoke openly about being on Obama's short list for VP and also about the possibility of landing a Cabinet post, such as secretary of state, should Obama win.
The McCain campaign has been notably tight-lipped about its vice-presidential selection process. But when asked about it, Mr. McCain has tended to say that he does not believe geographical considerations matter much in modern politics -- which might make the Michigan argument weaker -- and that he is most concerned about finding someone who shares his beliefs and who could take over as president if necessary.
