Police say a national traffic safety agency is sending inspectors to suburban New York City to look at a wrecked Toyota Prius (PREE'-uhs) that its driver said accelerated on its own into a stone wall.
Harrison police Capt. Anthony Marraccini (mehr-uh-CHEE'-nee) said Thursday the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration told him it would visit the town to look over the car.
The 2005 Prius was being driven Monday by a woman who told police it sped up on its own as she was easing out of her employer's driveway.
Local police had invited the traffic safety agency to join or take over the investigation. They say the accelerator issue is a national concern and their department doesn't have the necessary technology or training.
Toyota has recalled more than 8 million vehicles to address gas pedal issues.
