Transit officials agree to pay $1.5M over shooting
The Associated PressSan Francisco area transit officials say they've agreed to make a $1.5 million settlement payment in the fatal shooting of a 22-year-old man by a transit police officer.
Oscar Grant was shot on a Bay Area Rapid Transit train platform in Oakland on New Year's Day 2009. BART said Wednesday the agency has agreed to pay Sophina Mesa, the mother of Grant's five-year-old daughter, Tatiana.
BART Board President James Fang says the settlement will provide financial support for the girl. The structure of the settlement must be approved by court officials.
Johannes Mehserle, a one-time BART police officer, is charged in the killing of Grant. He has pleaded not guilty to murder in the case.
