Los Angeles fire officials say at least 12 people have been killed in the collision of a Metrolink commuter train and a freight train in the San Fernando Valley.
Dr. Marc Eckstein, the fire department's medical director, also said early Saturday at least two more people are still trapped inside a passenger car but he isn't sure whether they are alive.
Los Angeles police Lt. John Romero says the death toll may be as high as 20.
The death toll reports have been rising for several hours as firefighters continue to work over the wreckage from Friday afternoon's train collision.
As many as 135 people have been reported injured.
