Vegas councilman survives recall special election

The Associated Press

Las Vegas Ward 6 Councilman Steve Ross has survived a recall after garnering 70 percent of a special election vote.

The 49-year-old Ross took 4,319 votes Tuesday to top Planning Commissioner Byron Goynes' 1,845 votes.

Recall supporters say Ross refused to help a car dealer who was forced to close over a zoning dispute, but did help another car dealer who donated to his campaign.

The 51-year-old Goynes had sought the seat in the past.

The Las Vegas Review-Journal reports (http://bit.ly/A97GUl ) Ross had raised more than $106,000 for his 20-day campaign, using it to depict Goynes as a "puppet" of the disgruntled car dealer.

Goynes reported receiving about $9,000 during the campaign. While the recall committee is separate from his campaign, Goynes has acknowledged he probably benefitted from its efforts.
