High court says no to same-day audio on guns case

Mark Sherman

The Supreme Court is declining to release the audio of Tuesday's high-profile argument over gun rights upon its conclusion.

Spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said the court turned down a request by broadcasters, often made in closely watched cases, to provide the same-day audio recordings of the argument. With television cameras and reporters' tape recorders barred from the court, the availability of audio provides the public with a chance to hear the justices at work.

In September, the justices provided audio the same day they heard arguments in a key case about limits on campaign spending by corporations and labor unions. The 2000 presidential election fight at the high court was the first time the court quickly released audio recordings.

(This version CORRECTS APNewsNow. SUBS lead to correct time element; Conclusion of argument expected around 11 a.m. EST; will be led. Moving on general news and entertainment services.)
