GOP primary to replace Wexler might need recount

The Associated Press

South Florida Democrats have picked a state lawmaker to battle for the seat vacated by former U.S. Rep. Robert Wexler, while the GOP special primary election appears headed for a re-count.

The Republican race was too close to call Tuesday night. With 99 percent of the precincts counted, contractor Ed Lynch had a 37-vote margin over financial planner Joe Budd. Retired police officer Curt Price trailed far behind.

A re-count would be held within five days.

State Sen. Ted Deutch handily won the Democratic nomination. He will face the GOP winner in the special general election April 13. The victor will serve the last nine months of Wexler's term, then run for re-election to a full term in November.

Wexler resigned in January to lead a Middle East think tank.
