Poll: Obama, McCain in tight race in Indiana

The Associated Press

THE POLL: Indianapolis Star/WTHR, presidential race in Indiana of likely voters. (The state has 11 electoral votes.)

THE NUMBERS: Barack Obama 47 percent, John McCain 44 percent.

OF INTEREST: Obama appears to have made a tight race in Indiana, which all Republican presidential nominees have won since 1968 — usually by wide margins. Nine of 10 McCain backers say they are satisfied with Sarah Palin as his running mate, while one in four Obama supporters say they wish he had picked someone besides Joe Biden. One-fourth of the voters say they could change their mind or are undecided.

DETAILS: Conducted Sept. 14-16 by telephone survey with 600 likely voters. Sampling error margin plus or minus 4 percentage points.
