McCain talks up Palin as a reformer

The Associated Press

Republican presidential candidate John McCain says running mate Sarah Palin is good for the country because of what he calls her reformer credentials.

Appearing Friday on the television show "The View," McCain said that the Alaska governor would reform spending for lawmakers' pet projects. He also said that she didn't request earmarks as governor — which is not true. Palin sought nearly $200 million in such earmarks this year.

McCain says he's very happy with his selection of Palin for the ticket. He says "she's ignited a spark in America." But he also acknowledges that they sometimes have different views.

McCain defended TV commercials criticizing his Democratic opponent, Barack Obama, saying "they're not lies."
