Where in the world is Mark Sanford? That's what everyone was asking in June when the Republican Governor of South Carolina, who at the time was considered one of the leading contenders for his party's 2012 presidential nomination, went missing for several days. His staff told reporters that Sanford was hiking the Appalachian Trail, but reporters smelled a rat.

Fast-forward five days later when, at a hastily-called news conference, a clearly emotionally-battered Sanford resurfaced, confessing he had not been hiking, but rather visiting his "soul mate" in Argentina.

After a three month investigation, on November 23 the South Carolina Ethics Commission filed 37 charges against Sanford for misuing taxpayer money associated with his trysts. However, efforts to impeach Sanford proved unsuccessful after a panel threw out 28 of the charges against the Governor in early December.

Nearly six months after his infidelity became public, Sanford's wife, Jenny, filed for divorce on December 11.
