In 1980, Massachusetts Sen. Edward Kennedy won 10 presidential primaries while running against the sitting Democratic President Jimmy Carter, who won 24. Though faced with an insurmountable delegate deficit and close to 3 million less in the popular vote, Kennedy took the fight to the convention hoping to change the rule binding delegates to a candidate. He lost badly, but delivered a rousing speech that was likely the greatest of his career -- and one Carter still partly blames for his eventual loss to Ronald Reagan.
