Four years after the publication of his book, "The Conscience of a Conservative," and one year after the assassination of J.F.K., Barry Goldwater would go on to lose in one of the biggest landslides in U.S. history, winning just 6 states. However, Goldwater's nomination at the 1964 Republican convention in San Francisco was a win for conservatives -- who were finally able to overtake the moderate wing of the party -- and led to the conservative presidencies of Ronald Reagan and George W. Bush.

"I would remind you that extremism in the defense of liberty is no vice. And let me remind you also that moderation in the pursuit of justice is no virtue."
