Nevada’s 3rd Congressional District comprises all but the northern suburbs of Las Vegas. It is a new district – created after the 2000 Census yielded Nevada a third House seat. It went slightly for Gore in 2000 and slightly for Bush in 2004.

Representative Jon Porter has held it since its creation. In both elections, he has faced well-funded challengers – and has proven himself to be one of the best Republican fundraisers. He will need that talent this time. His challenger, former Harry Reid aide Tessa Hafen, has done an excellent job fundraising despite a relatively late start. Porter – thanks to incumbency, fundraising and the district’s slight Republican lean – has an advantage. However, both the NRCC and the DCCC are planning to spend here, which is a sign that it will be a close one either way.
