This seat was already in the vulnerable category for Republicans before 10-term GOP Rep. James Walsh announced he was retiring. After holding off former congressional aide Dan Maffei by just 2 points in 2006 -- in a district both Kerry and Gore carried -- Walsh would have had to hold off a second run by Maffei.
The Syracuse-based district is becoming more Democratic, and it didn't help that the GOP had to settle on former County Legislature chairman Dale Sweetland (R), who has so far proven an anemic fundraiser and weak candidate.
