A DUI and admitted extramarrital affair led GOP Rep. Vito Fossella to announce in May that he would not run for re-election. In June, the GOP's last hope for retaining the seat, Frank Powers, died. It now appears that the winner of the September 9 Democratic primary will win the seat.
And that person is New York City Councilman Mike McMahon, who easily defeated attorney Stephen Harrison, the 2006 nominee, in the primary with 75% of the vote. The Republican nominee is former state Assemblyman Bob Straniere, who defeated four others to win the GOP nomination.
