John Hoeven, currently the longest-serving governor in the country, is seeking his third term in office. He is favored to retain his seat against state Sen. Tim Mathern, who represents Fargo in the Legislature.
With the landslide 1964 presidential election the lone exception, North Dakota has voted Republican in 16 of the last 17 presidential elections.
