Florida House Speaker to Back Perry

Florida House Speaker to Back Perry

By Erin McPike - August 24, 2011

Call it another coup for Rick Perry: The Texan plans to announce later today that he has secured the endorsement of Florida House Speaker Dean Cannon.

Already today, the newest entrant to the presidential race has emerged as the national front-runner in the Republican field, according to a new Gallup poll. He’s made strides in the traditional early states of Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina, and today’s endorsement shows that he’ll be a major factor in the Sunshine State, too.

Cannon has a been a leading advocate for keeping Florida’s primary early in the calendar, as it was in 2008. He’s also a rising star in his home state, and an endorsement from the House speaker in a state that size is no small achievement -- consider that one former speaker is Marco Rubio, now a freshman senator.
